Can the bonds of friendship weather a betrayal? Charlotte has not been back to Quinnipeague for ten years. The Maine island is synonymous with some of her best memories, but now also with things she'd rather forget; things she's put to the back of her mind while travelling the world as a journalist. Like how she betrayed her best friend. Nicole is in need of a co-writer for the book she's writing on local food; and if she's honest, she's in need of a friend too. Guarding her husband's secret alone is weighing her down. She doesn't imagine for a second that Charlotte will actually come - she's used to rejected invitations after ten years. When Charlotte arrives, it's almost as if nothing has changed between the two women. But of course it has. As they prepare to spend the summer together, Charlotte begins to wonder: can you ever go home again?
